Spiritual Significance & History

Ramanathaswamy Temple is located on Rameswaram Island in Tamil Nadu. The Lingam here was established and worshipped by Lord Rama to seek penance after the war in Lanka. The temple is famous for having the longest temple corridor in the world, adorned with beautifully carved pillars. Pilgrims traditionally bathe in the 22 holy water tanks (Theerthams) inside the temple complex before performing worship at the main sanctum.

As one of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas, this holy temple acts as a focal point of intense spiritual energy. Devotees travel from far and wide to capture a glance (Darshan) of the divine light form of Lord Shiva. It is believed that visual contemplation of the Lingam combined with the chanting of Om Namah Shivaya clears the mind of worldly attachments and awakens cosmic consciousness.
