Spiritual Significance & History

Situated at an altitude of 3,583 meters in the snow-capped Garhwal Himalayas near the Mandakini River, Kedarnath is the highest of the 12 Jyotirlingas. Accessible only by trek or helicopter, it is also a vital part of the Char Dham pilgrimage. Built of massive stone slabs on a rectangular platform, it has survived harsh winters and natural disasters for centuries. The Lingam here is in the form of a triangular hump, representing the back of Lord Shiva when he took the form of a bull.

As one of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas, this holy temple acts as a focal point of intense spiritual energy. Devotees travel from far and wide to capture a glance (Darshan) of the divine light form of Lord Shiva. It is believed that visual contemplation of the Lingam combined with the chanting of Om Namah Shivaya clears the mind of worldly attachments and awakens cosmic consciousness.
