Spiritual Significance & History

Grishneshwar, sometimes referred to as Ghrneshwar, is located close to the famous Ellora Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Maharashtra. It is the last or twelfth Jyotirlinga. The temple was beautifully rebuilt in the 18th century by the noble queen Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore, constructed using red volcanic rocks that give it a distinctive warm glow. The temple carvings depict various beautiful forms and legends of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

As one of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas, this holy temple acts as a focal point of intense spiritual energy. Devotees travel from far and wide to capture a glance (Darshan) of the divine light form of Lord Shiva. It is believed that visual contemplation of the Lingam combined with the chanting of Om Namah Shivaya clears the mind of worldly attachments and awakens cosmic consciousness.
