Spiritual Significance & History

Bhimashankar is situated in the Sahyadri hills of Maharashtra, surrounded by dense forests that serve as a wildlife sanctuary. It is also the source of the Bhima River. Built in the Nagara architectural style, the temple is associated with the legend of Lord Shiva destroying the demon Tripurasura. The holy environment of the forest combined with the gentle sound of the river makes Bhimashankar a true heaven for pilgrims seeking peace.

As one of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas, this holy temple acts as a focal point of intense spiritual energy. Devotees travel from far and wide to capture a glance (Darshan) of the divine light form of Lord Shiva. It is believed that visual contemplation of the Lingam combined with the chanting of Om Namah Shivaya clears the mind of worldly attachments and awakens cosmic consciousness.
