Baidyanath Temple
Spiritual Significance & History
Also known as Baba Dham, this temple is located in Deoghar, Jharkhand. It is revered as the place where the demon king Ravana worshipped Shiva to obtain the divine Lingam. Shiva acted as a doctor (Vaidya) to heal Ravana's chopped heads, hence the name Baidyanath. During the holy Hindu month of Shravana, millions of devotees carry holy water from the Ganges in Sultanganj over a distance of 108 km on foot to perform abhishekam of Baba Baidyanath.
As one of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas, this holy temple acts as a focal point of intense spiritual energy. Devotees travel from far and wide to capture a glance (Darshan) of the divine light form of Lord Shiva. It is believed that visual contemplation of the Lingam combined with the chanting of Om Namah Shivaya clears the mind of worldly attachments and awakens cosmic consciousness.
