Devotees worship Lord Shiva by fasting, engaging in Abhishek (a ritual bath), offering prayers at the temples, including the mantra offerings, and participating in Shiva mantra chanting.

For many people, this month is not about doing a lot but more about infusing some devotion into their daily lives.

Most importantly, devotees believe that Mondays during this month are sacred, and are called Shravan Somvar. On these days, they fast, visit Shiva temples and engage in the Seva of Shiva chanting.

Why Is Shravan Related to Shiva?

There are many regional legends associated with Shravan Month. One of the most popular relates to the Samudra Manthan (the churning of the cosmic waters), where Lord Shiva consumed the deadly poison to protect the universe, and as a result, his throat became blue. This is the legend that explains the name Neelkanth.

For these reasons and more, Shravan is connected with Shiva worship across several traditions.

What Do People Do in Shravan?

The practices vary from family to family and region to region.

Some devotees visit Shiva temples daily, offer water to the Shivling, offer bilva leaves, chant Om Namah Shivaya, keep Monday fasts, read Shiva-related scriptures and listen to bhajan music, practice meditation, and perform Abhishek.

There is no fixed way to perform Shravan. Some people think it takes going to a temple every Monday, but for others it may be as simple as ten silent minutes every morning with the Shiva mantra.

The Simple Side of Shravan

One of the beautiful aspects of Shravan is that devotion can be simple.

A quiet space with a Shiva image, a minute or two of chanting, and a sincere prayer or intention creates the opportunity for a profound experience. This is what My Shivālay is also founded on.

You can listen to a Shiva Bhajan, read a Shloka, or simply take a Darshana of Shiva.

A Simple Shravan Routine

To keep your routine simple, consider doing this:

Spend a few minutes in the morning in silence.

Chant Om Namah Shivaya.

Offer water to your Shivling, if you have one, however you choose to do so in your family.

Read a short Shiva Shloka.

Spend a few minutes without any distractions.

Shravan does not have to be about adding another thing to your already busy life. It is an excuse to slow down.

Listen Now

Why Shravan Maas is sacred to Lord Shiva, the meaning of Shravan Somvar, and simple ways to bring devotion into daily life.

[3

post-14","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-shravan
["GET
